HIOKI has focused exclusively on electrical measuring instruments since its founding in 1935. We’ve dedicated ourselves to pursuing proprietary technologies and developing new products so that we can provide new value to customers through high-quality instruments. Even as the time have changed, that approach has remained constant.

1930s

1935

  • Mizo Hioki begins manufacturing electrical indicating meters in Minato-ku, Tokyo.

1938

  • Mizo Hioki establishes HIOKI Electrical Instrument Works in Meguro-ku, Tokyo

1940s

1942

  • Mizo Hioki’s brothers Mineji and Shiro join the young business.

1945

  • HIOKI’s plant is relocated to Sakaki-machi in Nagano Prefecture after World War II.

1946

  • HIOKI launches its first tester (the MODEL H CIRCUIT TESTER).

1950s

1952

  • HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION is incorporated with a capitalization of 1.8 million. Mineji Hioki is the first president of the new company.

  • The U.S. Air Force (Far East) taps HIOKI to manufacture MIL-SPEC multi-testers for use in aircraft maintenance.

1954

  • Seeking to capitalize on the favorable response it has received in the market due to its status as the designated manufacturer of Air Force testing equipment in the Far East, HIOKI begins exporting testers to North America.

1959

  • The Tokyo Office opens in Kandasuda-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

1960s

1961

  • The company’s trademark design is finalized.

  • The Osaka Sales Office opens in Naniwa-ku, Osaka Prefecture.

1962

  • The HIOKI mission statement is adopted.

  • The first issue of Shaso, HIOKI’s company newsletter, is published.

1963

  • The Nagoya Sales Office opens in Atsuta-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture.

1965

  • HIOKI begins mass production of VU meters.

1967

  • HIOKI is recognized by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry for helping boost Japanese export volume.

1968

  • HIOKI’s electrical indicating meters are certified to bear the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) mark.

1970s

1971

  • Koji Hioki becomes President and CEO of the company.

  • HIOKI launches the CLAMP AMMETER CT-300.

1972

  • The Fukuoka Sales Office opens in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka.

  • HIOKI opens a manufacturing plant in Shinshushin-machi, Kamiminochi-gun, Nagano Prefecture.

  • HIOKI begins developing field measuring instruments.

1973

  • Tsuneaki Hioki becomes President and CEO of the company.

  • Miyaji Tomota, former President of Yokogawa Electric Corporation, joins HIOKI as an Advisor.

  • HIOKI launches the INSULATION RESISTANCE METER IR-305.

  • HIOKI launches the GROUND RESISTANCE METER ER-309.

1975

  • HIOKI develops and launches a taut band meter with an internal magnet.

  • HIOKI launches the DIGITAL HiTESTER 3201.

  • The Kanto Branch is established.

1976

  • An official company song is adopted.

1977

  • HIOKI brand products are launched in the U.S. market.

  • HIOKI launches the DIGITAL CLAMP HiTESTER 3202.

1978

  • HIOKI’s battery-powered insulation resistance meter and circuit tester are certified to bear the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) mark.

  • HIOKI develops and launches the industry-leading CLAMP-ON POWER HiTESTER 3131 and 3133, both clamp-type power meters.

  • HIOKI launches the Yamabiko promotional car and begins a tour to visit end-users nationwide.

1979

  • HIOKI’s sales network is expanded (with new sales facilities in Shizuoka, Sapporo, Sendai, and Hiroshima).

1980s

1980

  • The first issue of HIOKI Technical Bulletin is published.

1981

  • HIOKI changes its logomark design.

  • HIOKI launches the CLAMP-ON POWER HiTESTER 3161.

  • HIOKI launches the HiTESTER 3000.

1982

  • The Kanagawa Sales Office opens in Kanagawa-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.

1983

  • HIOKI’s CLAMP-ON POWER HiTESTER receives the Excellent Product Award from the Energy Conservation Center and the Excellent Energy-saving Product Award from the Japan Machinery Federation.

  • HIOKI receives the Tokyo Commerce and Industry Bureau Director’s Award in recognition of its operation of a superior JIS-compliant plant.

  • HIOKI develops and launches the industry-leading MEMORY HiCORDER 8801.

1984

  • HIOKI begins exporting products to China.

1985

  • HIOKI publishes Fifty Years of HIOKI Electrical Equipment as part of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of its founding.

  • HIOKI holds a Memorial Family Sports Day as part of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of its founding.

  • HIOKI produces the statue Challenge to Dream as part of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of its founding.

  • HIOKI halts production and commercial availability of electrical indicating meters.

  • HIOKI receives its first Good Design Award (for the MEMORY HiCORDER 8801 and five other models).

1986

  • The HIOKI Philosophy is adopted.

  • HIOKI launches the IN-CIRCUIT HiTESTER 1101.

1987

  • The Kanagawa Sales office opens in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture.

1988

  • Employees hold a tree-planting festival at HIOKI Forest Hills, the site of the current Head Office.

  • Construction of a new Head Office and main plant (the current Head Office) begins.

1989

  • Forest Hills Scholarship Fund, a special public-interest trust, is launched.

1990s

1990

  • The Head Office and main plant are relocated to a newly completed facility at HIOKI Forest Hills in Ueda, Nagano Prefecture.

  • An automated mail robot begins service at the Head Office.

  • HIOKI launches the IN-CIRCUIT HiTESTER 1110.

1991

  • HIOKI stock is listed on Japan’s over-the-counter market (currently JASDAQ).

  • The Ueda Minami League youth baseball program is launched.

1992

  • HIOKI receives the Japan Greenery Research and Development Center President’s Award in recognition of its active promotion of afforestation.

  • Six banks of night lights are installed at HIOKI’s ballpark.

1993

  • HIOKI receives ISO 9001 certification.

  • HIOKI Lodge is completed.

1994

  • HIOKI Forest Plaza Corporation is established.

1995

  • Yuji Hioki becomes President and CEO of the company.

  • HIOKI holds HIOKI Techno Festival ’95 as part of events commemorating the 60th anniversary of its founding.

  • The first Local Afforestation event is held at Kamishina Elementary School.

1996

  • HIOKI’s method and device for detecting the polarity of electrolytic capacitors receive the Ikemoto Award for Distinguished Invention in the 21st Japan Invention Grand Prize program.

  • The BATTERY HiTESTER 3550 receives the Kansai Electric Power President’s Award at the Electrical Construction Equipment and Materials Fair’s product contest.

  • HIOKI introduces a redesigned logomark.

  • HIOKI launches a website.

1997

  • HIOKI earns ISO 14001 certification.

1998

  • The CLAMP-ON POWER HiTESTER 3166 receives the Japan Machinery Federation President’s Award for achieving a superior level of energy savings.

  • Local subsidiary HIOKI USA Corporation is established in the United States.

  • HIOKI receives the Kanto International Trade and Industry Bureau Director’s Award in recognition of its active promotion of afforestation.

1999

  • HIOKI Engineering Service Corporation is established.

  • HIOKI launches Operation Win the Future, an internal reorganization effort.

2000s

2000

  • The joint venture TKK HIOKI is established in Taiwan.(The joint venture was dissolved in 2018.)

  • The Singapore Representative Office opens.

  • The first HIOKI Festival is held.

2001

  • The Shanghai Representative Office opens.

  • The Tokyo Office opens in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

  • The EARTH HiTESTER receives the Kanto Electrical Safety Inspection Association Chairman’s Award at the Electrical Construction Equipment and Materials Fair’s product contest.

  • HIOKI is listed on Section 2 of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

2002

  • The Management Advisory Board is created.

  • The joint venture HIKING Technology is established in China. (The joint venture was dissolved in 2018.)

2003

  • HIOKI is listed on Section 1 of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

  • HIOKI launches the REMOTE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM 2300 Series.

  • HIOKI launches the CAMERA MODULE EVALUATION SYSTEM 2211.

2004

  • HIOKI receives the 6th Shinshu Ecology Grand Prize in recognition of its Local Afforestation program.

2005

  • Tatsuyoshi Yoshiike becomes President and CEO of the company.

  • HIOKI’s PHASE DETECTOR receives the Industrial Safety Institute Chairman’s Award at the Electrical Construction Equipment and Materials Fair’s product contest.

  • The HIOKI Scholarship and Greening Foundation is established.

  • HIOKI receives the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award in recognition of its active promotion of afforestation.

  • HIOKI’s indoor wiring diagnostic system development work is recognized with the Japan Electric Association’s 50th Shibusawa Award.

  • HIOKI holds the HIOKI Solution Fair as part of events commemorating the 60th anniversary of its founding.

  • HIOKI publishes the Seventy Years of HIOKI DVD and Twenty Years of HIOKI.

2006

  • The joint venture THT Technology is established in Taiwan. (The joint venture was dissolved in 2018.)

  • The Tianjin Representative Office opens.

  • Construction of a new plant adjacent to the Head Office and main plant is completed.

  • DKK-TOA Corporation transfers its electronic measuring instruments business to HIOKI.

2007

  • HIOKI (Shanghai) Sales & Trading Co., Ltd., is established with branch offices in Beijing and Guangzhou.

  • HIOKI begins supporting the Kenya Vegetation Restoration Project.

  • HIOKI’s automated mail robot stops operation.

2008

  • HIOKI develops and launches the world’s first metallic non-contact voltmeter (SAFETY HiTESTER).

  • The SAFETY HiTESTER receives the Kansai Electrical Safety Inspection Association Chairman’s Award at the Electrical Construction Equipment and Materials Fair’s product contest.

  • HIOKI is recognized by the Minister of State for Measures for Declining Birthrate for distinguished service under the Supporting Children and Families in Japan program.

  • HIOKI (Shanghai) Sales & Trading Co., Ltd., opens sub-branch offices in the Chinese cities of Suzhou, Dongguan, Tianjin, and Shenzhen.

  • HIOKI launches the Green Point Campaign in support of environmental responsibility.

2009

  • HIOKI’s main plant is recognized by the Prime Minister of Japan for distinguished service in promoting afforestation during 2009.

2010s

2010

  • HIOKI India Private Limited is established. (The company closed in 2016.)

  • HIOKI Singapore Pte. Ltd. is established.

2011

  • Representative office opens in Daejeon, South Korea.

  • The MEMORY HiCorder MR8880 and POWER QUALITY ANALYZER PW3198 receive the 2011 Good Design Award.

  • HIOKI receives the 2011 Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Encouragement Award in recognition of its safety and hygiene policies.

2012

  • HIOKI Korea Co., Ltd., is established in South Korea.

  • The MAGNETIC FIELD HiTESTER FT3470-55 receives the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Japan, President’s Award at the 2012 Electrical Construction Equipment and Materials Fair’s product contest.

  • Representative office opens in Taiwan. (The company closed in 2018.)

  • The MEMORY HiCORDER MR8875 receives the 2012 Good Design Award.

  • HIOKI receives the Dark-blue Ribbon Medal in recognition of community service initiatives including its donation of musical instruments to an Ueda elementary school.

2013

  • Masanobu Machida becomes President and CEO of the company.

  • Yasuo Nakagami, formerly an executive director (representative director) at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., becomes an outside director of the company. The Management Advisory Board is eliminated.

  • HIOKI Engineering Service Corporation is absorbed by HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION.

  • The Seoul Representative Office opens in Seoul, South Korea. (The company closed in 2014.)

  • Construction of the Research Center and the Health & Fitness Center begins.(Construction of the Health & Fitness Center is completed in November.)

  • The DT4200 series of digital multimeters receives a Good Design Award.

2014

  • The Flying Probe Tester FA1240 receives 2014 NPI Award in the category of Test & Inspection at the IPC APEX EXPO.

  • The CLAMP ON POWER LOGGER PW3365 receives the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Tourism Award in the JECA FAIR 2014 product contest.

  • The VOLTAGE SENSOR PW9020 receives a 2014 Design for the Future Award (Good Design Special Award).

2015

  • Construction of the HIOKI Innovation Center, the company’s new R&D facility, is completed.

  • The HIOKI Innovation Fair is held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the company’s founding.

  • The no-metal-contact VOLTAGE SENSOR PW9020 and CLAMP ON POWER LOGGER PW3365 receive the Special Jury Award at the 45th Machine Industry Design Awards.

  • The VOLTAGE SENSOR PW9020 receives a German Design Award 2016 Special Mention.(The German Design Award is an international design award.)

2016

  • HIOKI changes the color of its corporate logomark.

  • Middle East Representative Office opens in Dubai, UAE.

  • HIOKI India Private Limited is established in India. (Company name change in 2019.)

2017

  • Kazutoshi Hosoya becomes President and CEO of HIOKI.

  • Construction of HIOKI Lodge No.2 is completed.

  • HIOKI Europe GmbH is founded in Germany.

  • HIOKI USA Corporation’s Western Regional Office opens in Torrance, California, U.S.A

  • The AC Clamp Power Meter CM3286/CM3286-01, Non-contact AC Voltage Probe SP3000, AC Voltage Probe SP9001, RGB Laser Iluminance Meter TM6102, RGB Laser Luminance Meter TM6103, and Optical Power Meter TM6104 receive 2017 Good Design Awards.

2018

  • HIOKI TAIWAN CO.,LTD. is founded in Taiwan.

  • PT. HIOKI ELECTRIC INSTRUMENT is founded in Indonesia.

  • The Memory HiCorder MR6000 receives an internationally prestigious iF Design Award.

  • The Illuminance measurement support system [Lux Meter FT3425, Extension Cart Z5023, GENNECT Cross SF4072 (Android) , GENNECT Cross SF4071 (iOS)], AC/ DC Current Sensor CT6904, Power Analyzer PW3390, Memory HiCorder MR6000, MR6000-01 receive 2018 Good Design Awards.

2019

  • The Current Probe CT6710 and Current Probe CT6711 user manuals receive the Excellence Award and the Manual of the Year Award in the industry category at the 2019 Japan Manual Awards.

  • The AC/DC Current Sensor CT6877 receives a Selection Award at the JIDA Museum Selection Vol. 21.

  • The AC/DC Current Sensor CT6877, AC/DC Clamp Meter CM4375, CM4376, AC Clamp Meter CM4141, CM4142 receive 2019 Good Design Awards.
